ME102B EZ-Darkroom
For my ME102B capstone, we built a machine that helps people process and develop film at home without the usual stress, mess, and guesswork.
Background
As digital photography took over, a lot of community darkrooms disappeared and film got harder to learn in a practical way. EZ Darkroom is a single system for film processing, developing, and scanning, built for people who do not have access to a traditional lab. We focused on the real barriers that push beginners away, like needing complete darkness, handling chemicals safely, managing timing, and not wanting to ruin a full roll in a tiny apartment.
Traditional hand processing asks a lot from someone who is just getting started. You need to work in near blackout conditions, keep track of every step, and stay careful with ventilation and chemistry the whole time. We wanted to test whether automation could remove the most intimidating parts without stripping out what people actually like about shooting film.
Outcomes
We built a compact machine that runs the full process in a controlled sequence. Film loading, chemical handling, and timing happen inside the system, which lowers the chance of accidental exposure and reduces direct contact with chemistry. The goal was to make first rolls less intimidating while still keeping the satisfaction that makes analog photography worth doing.
EZ Darkroom sits between traditional technique and practical home use. The results are more consistent, the footprint is smaller, and the interface is easier to approach without feeling dumbed down. If developing at home feels realistic again, more people can stick with film even without access to an institutional darkroom.
